Gum Disposal Bin

April 6th, 2007 Posted in Canada and Beyond

If you happen to notice gum disposal bins in downtown Toronto (or anywhere else) and not sure what this is all about – you are not the only one in that situation. Two entrepreneur moms came up with this brilliant idea to install gum containers in public places and created the world’s first and only public gum container. But the big question is – is it going to work?

I have seen people littering in the streets just to avoid walking half a block to the nearest garbage bin. City trash bins are overflowing due to lack of scheduled maintenance. Also, you will see objects are being thrown out of the car window on the highway. Not everyone does these things but some of us do.
The idea of having disposal bins only for gum is definitely an environmentally friendly one. But I doubt that people will walk up to one of these to trash gum or will even bother to look for one. And also the questions of servicing these gum bins lie up in the air. Is it going to be cost-effective? Who will look after these? Are we willing to spend extra money on installing and maintaining these bins?  I think it would be a lot easier to make the most use of what we already have (regular trash bins) and also we should litter more responsibly even if that means walking an extra half of a block.
