Virtual City

April 8th, 2007 Posted in Internet and Technology

When Google Earth was launched for the first time, I spent hours exploring satellite images. It was something we never experienced before. If you liked Google Earth, you would love www.virtualcity.ca

Virtual City allows you to view major metropolitan cities through street level photography and you don’t need to install anything on your computer. It allows you to follow Google Map from one location to another and you will be able to stroll through streets and view millions of actual pictures.  How all these are possible? According to Virtual City, "VirtualCity’s photographs are collected via highly specialized mapping vehicles equipped with high-definition video cameras and the latest in global positioning technology.  GIS-grade GPS, accelerometers to sense increases and decreases in acceleration, and gyro meters to sense directional changes, all tie into the vehicles’ computer bus to sense each full rotation of the wheels, while custom software compares these readings 10 times per second to create extremely accurate location data regardless of degraded GPS or "urban canyons.”

I watched my daily home to work route on Virtual City and it was a great experience to see my daily route on my laptop. Definitely those high resolution pictures looked a lot better than what I see with my eyes everyday. This is a great site to explore and I would like to recommend www.virtualcity.ca to my readers.
