Little Steps Toward A Greener Canada

Greener%20Canada.jpg The federal government has announced to put a limit on phosphates in household cleaners by 2010. The government has finally come up with a decision which is long overdue. This decision should have been made long time ago. Roughly, thirty years ago, pressure from environment-conscious citizens made Ottawa to decrease phosphate in laundry detergents substantially. Phosphate is poisonous and releases toxins into waters. Whenever I buy dishwashing detergents – I try to go with the one with the lowest level of phosphate in it. Manufacturers currently make it hard to read phosphate percentage on labels; sometimes they don’t put phosphate percentage at all.

By 2010, all household cleaners (including dishwashing detergents) will content no more than 0.5 per cent phosphates. Currently, phosphate limit in laundry detergents is 2.2 per cent and dishwashing detergents and other cleaners have no phosphate limits.
