Rogers just published their much-anticipated new iPhone rates yesterday, and they were a total disappointment for many Canadians who were waiting to jump into the iPhone hype. I was thinking of switching from my Pay As You Go to an iPhone plan; however, I retreated from the hype into reality as paying more than double would not be a wise financial decision.

The cheapest plan starts at $60 and the premium plan has a $115 price tag. No, you don’t get caller ID with these plans. You need to pay an additional $15 to get that feature. Let’s say I want the cheapest plan with caller ID; how much I am looking at paying? Nearly a whopping $100. No, I am not kidding. Here is the breakdown:

Basic Charge = $60

911 Fees = $0.50

Caller ID = $15.00

System Access Fee = $6.95

+ Taxes
——————————————————-
Nearly $100, which is unbelievable

Also, don’t forget that you need to stick to a 3 year contract. None of these plans offers unlimited data or a flexible voice plan. Canada may be a 1st world country, but its telecommunication carriers are still living in the dark ages. Rogers’ artificial rate hike is not good for its reputation or for business. Once we have new players in the market, Rogers’s to monopolize the market will be gone.
