Forever Young Books, Freakonomics, and a Paperback Version in Europe

I believe a book can never be considered old or out of date—a book is a book. You will often find me reviewing books on A Dawn Journal which are not so recently published. The reason for this is that I usually buy books when they are on sale.

I love reading books, and I love collecting them as well. A bad habit I have acquired is that I can never read a book borrowed from a library. In order to read a book, I must own it first.

Canada’s largest bookseller, Chapters.Indigo (it’s like Barnes and Noble in the U.S.), has a section where you will always find books on sale—this is my favourite section of the bookstore. Whenever I enter a Chapters.Indigo bookstore, I will spend hour after hour browsing a wide variety of books. I always check out the books on sale first, and then check out the rest of the store. In the middle of my book-browsing journey, I take a small break and have a cup of coffee at the Starbucks located inside the store.

Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner is a book which I have always wanted to read and review. However, I refrained from buying it because it was always too expensive. Recently, however, my nephew picked up a paperback copy of this book at Heathrow Airport in London.

Wait a minute – a paperback copy of Freakonomics? Yes, indeed. In North America, you won’t see any paperback copies, only lots of expensive hardcover copies. Does that mean the publisher is willingly not releasing a paperback version in North America to make more money from the hardcover version? The only possible answer I can come up with is: yes. Though to be fair, I have no idea why they released a paperback version in Europe, and did not follow through with North America; instead forcing interested American readers to purchase a hardcover copy.

And how about a short Freakonomics review? Yes, I do have a review in mind, but I have yet to write it. If I write it, you will read it here at Canada’s  Personal Finance Blog.
