This device is used in the third world countries to abstract groundwater. In some areas, this is the only way to obtain fresh water. Some areas even can not afford to have tubewell. As a result, they have no access to fresh water. In Market Lane Park, downtown Toronto, you will find a fancy version of the same Tubewell for decoration purposes. And yes, it works.
