2009 update by wet coaster:

Minor updates, and a couple more glitches:
My capital gains transactions refused to list properly in the PDF version even after various edits. The forms were just blank. A couple of Windows Prt Scrn screen-captures fixed that, in case I have to actual print them.

Also the "online software" update failed, but the alternative of simply installing new versions over the old does work.

Spelling errors remain.

And the price is still good.

Other good news: online e-mail support is very responsive and pro-active (sending more stuff later).

So, all in all, still a great deal!

Looked around this year after seeing the prices for the web-based services. Being cheap, the mytaxexpress package looked pretty good!

It does work, but it is forms based, so if you have been using interview-based systems for a while, the return to the dreaded tax package is a bit of an eye-opener. Even if it is online.

You get what you pay for--the software can add and subtract, but there's no wiz-bang, there are spelling errors ("captital gains"), and some egregious systematic faults.

T5013 (partnership) forms come in old and new versions (thanks, Epcor, grr!) and mytaxexpress only provides the box numbers for the new.

The status check is quick (F2 for automated review of things to check), but it is what programmers call a "modal" box. You must close it before changing anything! You cannot print or save the report before going back to change your return! How stupid.

There is no online version of the tax forms (what does box 224 really mean?) so you are out of luck understanding what's going on there. It does have a "refund due" box at the bottom -- I really hate that when I put in the amount of spousal income, and see it drop! Discrimination against married/common-law it is. That is another rant.

OK, so none of this enough to make you avoid the software--how many people really need T5013 forms, anyways.

So buy it. It's cheap, like me.
