Who Is John Chow

If you don’t know John Chow, he is like the Donald Trump of the Internet. This self-proclaimed Dot Com Mogul has made the Dot Com Lifestyle world famous. Internet Entrepreneur John Chow makes roughly $40K per month from his blog John Chow Dot Com. Besides his blog, he has other Internet activities and it is likely that he makes money from those as well.

John Chow and A Dawn Journal (ADJ)

John Chow has been a friend of ADJ since its beginning. He has directly and indirectly contributed to make ADJ a success. Read my article on John Chow’s site outlining our first meetup – An Entrepreneur’s Journey Towards The Dot Com Lifestyle. I have known other celebrity bloggers, but John Chow is John Chow. He is very honest, friendly, and willing to go the extra mile for you – if you are able to make an impression on him.

Why Google Banned John Chow

In December 2006, to make his site more visible for “make money online” search results, John Chow started a link back campaign. He would give you a link from his site if you would link him with Anchor Text “make money online.” This campaign proved to be successful, as John’s income skyrocketed from $2800 to $12,500 in six months.

So far so good, right? Not so fast! You see, this type of linking campaign goes against Google’s policy. As a result, to make an example out of him, Google completely banned John Chow from its index. As a result of this ban, “John Chow” and “make money online” search results dropped from appearing on the first page and his PageRank dropped significantly as well.

How Google Ban Helped John Chow to Flourish His Brand Name and Dot Com Lifestyle

Any regular site would go extinct once Google implements its ban from its index. But this is John Chow we are talking about, and he is like no regular entrepreneur we come across daily. He was able to take advantage of Google ban to create a heavy Internet buzz – which gave him the Extra Push he needed to become a Dot Com Mogul super fast. There are many factors that made John Chow famous, but I think these are the main which skyrocketed his popularity:

He did what no one else would dare think about – he endeavoured to survive online without Google and worked towards achieving it

One single person, a solo entrepreneur, showed the courage to defy a giant like Google and still kept going on (his site only grew since the ban started) – this caught everyone’s attention

He was able to turn adversity into advantage. In order to be a successful entrepreneur, you need to use something negative to your advantage – what better example could there be than John Chow vs. Google?

What he did was very different than anything else that ever happened in the Internet world

What Made Google Lift the Ban and Got John Chow Back in Google Pavilion

You see, it’s all about relevancy. Google is all about relative search results – what people are looking for. Visitors kept searching for “John Chow” and getting scam and junk sites on the top search results – which meant that Google was not providing people with what they were looking for. On the other hand, John Chow was losing all the good traffic from Google – it’s not a situation they want to be in.

How John Chow Got Back in Google

Internet Entrepreneur Neil Patel facilitated an ice breaking between John Chow and Google. As a result, John Chow started to communicate with Matt Cuff, head of Google Webspam Team – which put John Chow back in Google.

Lessons to Take Home – John Chow Gives Practical Tips Based On His Google Ban Experience

I asked John Chow if he could provide us with some tips for this whole Google thing. Here is what he provided:

Work on your brand

Use other methods of traffic

Don’t let any one traffic source account for more than 25% of your traffic; or even 20%. Too many people just have Google as their main traffic source. If they get slapped with the ban, they’re toasted.

John Chow’s General Blog Tips

John Chow was also kind enough to give these general blog tips:

Pick a topic you’re passionate about

Pick a posting rate and stick to it no matter what

Find solutions to your readers’ problems

Capture the lead. Get the email of all your readers.

It’s all about building relationships

Final Word

It will be really tough, if not almost impossible, for average site owners to succeed without Google’s blessings. John Chow shares the same view. If you are an Internet Entrepreneur, and would like your path to be a smooth, successful one, make Google your friend. It’s a lot easier journey when you have Google on your side.

How To Buy Internet Real Estate

During a recession, property values tend to decrease, and those who can afford it don’t hesitate to grab the opportunity to acquire some nice properties at unbeatable costs. However, buying physical assets may not be a viable option for everyone due to the heavy upfront expenses you need to go through. But how about buying Internet real estate? Is it still possible to grab opportunities that exist due to economic turmoil and buy assets online with very little money and still flourish in the future?

The answer is: absolutely yes. You see, domains are like virtual real estate that exists only on the web. There are many similarities between domain names and real estate properties: both of them aren’t increasing in quantity any more, we are dealing with the same quantity today as we were twenty or thirty years ago, and due to limited supply, the price has to go up one day. You just need to buy those that will be in demand in the future.

In order to buy domains, you need to know a few things I discussed in this article – How to Make Money from Domain Names. I believe financial crisis opens up opportunities to buy domains which wouldn’t be available otherwise. In a financial meltdown, businesses close down and people lose jobs. As a result, lots of good domains drop out as businesses don’t need them anymore or people just can’t afford to maintain their domain portfolios.

Opportunistic entrepreneurs grab this opportunity to increase their domain buildups. I purchased most of my high-potential domains in the past few months. Also, I hired many programmers to develop a few new web sites. I can do it now because of low hiring costs available due to the current economic crisis. Entrepreneurs should be always on the lookout to use negative circumstances to their advantage and turn them into positive circumstances.

We all hate economic crises like the one we are going through today. The difference between a successful and a failed entrepreneur can be determined by how well you can use this crisis to build a better future. Yes, opportunities even exist in the midst of a crisis.

Writing an eBook

There are very few of us who are lucky enough from a financial point of view to be able to ignore an opportunity to make a bit more money. Even the hardest-working among us may often find that we have reason to consider new ways to make money, whether it be because we have new commitments, or an existing line of finance has stalled for one reason or another. In light of this, it makes a colossal amount of sense to consider other options so that we can maximize our earning potential. If we could all rely on money coming in when we needed it, chances are that the economy would collapse even further than it recently has, purely because the imperative to work would disappear.

It becomes the case, therefore, that we need to create our own lines of income. There is a limited range of things that we can do to make this happen – again, circumstances dictate that making money is never going to be as easy as sitting back and waiting for it to roll in. Making our own opportunities is important because in the final analysis it is down to the individual to make their own way – relying indefinitely on other people will only end one way, and that way is not an edifying prospect. Finding a way to maximize your potential hinges on one thing above all others – finding the answer to the following question: “What do you have that other people do not?”

Individual expertise is something that just about everyone has to some extent. Even if you do not consider yourself an expert, you will find that there is some talent you have that other people comment on. It may be something quite simple. It could be something that you do every day without it ever really being commented on. It might be technological, it might be musical, it may even be something as apparently simple as being a good listener and someone who is good with individual advice. Either way, this qualifies as expertise whether or not you realize it. And where there is expertise, there is cash. One popular way to turn your knowledge into money is by writing an eBook.

Think of it this way – you have the knowledge, and there are people out there who wish they did. Among these people there are certainly some who would pay good money to have that knowledge. As long as you can take the time to sit down and write a bit about how you do whatever it is that you do, how you learned that you could do it, and how other people could do the same thing, you can make money from this.

There is a growing market for eBooks as people realize that with the Internet revolutionizing our world you don’t need to have a publishing deal to write for money. All you need is a computer and a bit of savvy. If you can build websites yourself, then you can set one up to promote your eBook. If not, then you can set up a blog at any one of a number of free blogging platforms. Take a bit of time out of your day to explore the possibility – it could well turn into a very lucrative sideline for you.

Dot Com Lifestyle Journey Continues
Today, I will update you on a few things on my persuasion to live a Dot Com Lifestyle. The following paragraphs may not be related to each other.

Dot Com Lifestyle
A Dawn Journal has been on Google’s number one search results match for “Dot Come Lifestyle” for a while. Right now, it is no longer the number one match, but it’s still staying on the first page as the 3rd or 4th match. Hopefully, it will get back to the top position again shortly. For the “Canada personal finance” key phrase search, ADJ has been in the number one position for awhile.

Internet Entrepreneurship
As an Internet entrepreneur, I run many websites and own a handful of domains. A lot of these websites do not bear my name and as such visitors will not be able to tell who owns these sites when they browse. However, I will always tell you about those sites which have my name stamped on it, such as Canada Personal Finance Blog or Canada Personal Finance Website. I have decided to launch two new websites under my name.

These sites are:
The Green Living Blog – www.thegreenlivingblog.com
Simple Personal Development – www.simplepersonaldevelopment.com

Although these sites are now live, the site design has not been fully completed yet. I will write a post and issue a press release to let you know once they are 100% complete.

ADJ Is Making More Money Gradually
ADJ’s overall monthly income is going up gradually. In its first year ADJ made almost no money, but now I am seeing an increase in income slowly. Internet Entrepreneurship does not make you money overnight. You have to put in lot of research, effort, time, and hard work to become successful.

Trying New Ads
You may have noticed a new eBay ad displaying on ADJ on the right panel. I am trying this new ad to see what kind of money it makes. Also, I have replaced Kontera (www.kontera.com) In-text ad with Infolinks (www.infolinks.com). Since I have done this, my In-text revenue is up five-fold.

eBay and Amazon
What I like about eBay is that they have sophisticated Geo-Targeting technology. For instance, if a visitor from Australia clicks on it, it will take him to eBay Australia; if a visitor clicks from Canada, it will take her to eBay Canada. In this way, I am not missing global visitors. Amazon does not have this technology – I use Amazon Canada for my Canadian sites and Amazon USA for all other sites. This is quite a headache, as I need to create and maintain ads from more than one Amazon account.

I spoke with my programmer regarding Amazon’s Geo-targeting incapability. He mentioned that he might be able to write a PHP Script that would detect visitors’ country and show the appropriate Amazon ad based on its location. If this can be done, it will save me a lot of time and hassle.

That’s all for today. I will keep you updated on my Internet Entrepreneurship and there will be more posts on this shortly.

Internet Entrepreneurship Has No Limits

One thing I like about Internet Entrepreneurship is that you are not limited to only one or a few things. You can make money by doing numberless things, such as blogs, websites, eBooks, affiliate programs, Internet auctions, domain parking, and much more.

What Is a Domain Name?

Today, I am going to discuss how you can make money from domain names. The first thing you may ask is, “What is a domain name?” Let’s look at ADJ’s URL or web address. It is www.adawnjournal.com. Here adawnjournal.com is a domain name of ADJ. A domain name is something that identifies a site, its IP address.

How to Buy a Domain

You can buy a domain through domain registrar companies such as GoDaddy. There are lots of other companies offering domain services, but I use GoDaddy and they are one of the big players in the market. To buy, simply visit a domain registrar and you should able to figure out how to do so. If you are not sure, call their support line or send them an email.

What’s Next?

Once you have purchased your domain, you have many options by which you can use it to make money. I will describe the most important ones here:

Do Nothing – You can just hold the domain and do nothing, anticipating that one day your domain will increase in value and someone will buy it for lots of money. You have to be creative in buying if you would like to sell it for a higher price one day. You see, domain names are like Internet real estate and good domains will increase in value in time. For example, Business.com was sold for $7.5 Million and then it was sold again for $350 Million. I do not know who first bought it and at what price, but they almost certainly made a hefty profit.

Park Your Domain – If you do nothing and hold your domain, the domain registrar will be making money by creating a default page to direct visitors to your domain. Visitors often type wrong or misspelled domains into their browser and that’s how they end up on these parked domain pages. These pages look like real websites and some confused visitors will click on ads, directories, or search results (which are ads too). Once they click, the domain owner makes money. For example, moneysavingtipsnow.com is a parked domain which I own. So, instead of letting the domain registrar make money with your domains, why don’t you make money for yourself?

Or – You can use your domains to promote an affiliate program, sell your own (or someone else’s) products, or create a content rich site to draw traffic to generate income.

There are other ways to make money from domains, but those mentioned above are most used by entrepreneurs.

How to Park

There are many sites offering domain parking services; trafficparking.com, sedo.com, and namedrive.com to name a few. These sites have pages explaining everything you need to know about domain parking.

Final Word

You need to do a lot of research before buying domain names. There are thousands of free tools out there to help with your research. For example, there are tools that will tell you what misspelled names visitors are typing, tools that will tell you domains that are about to expire so you can grab them, tools that will suggest possible domain names to you if you enter keywords, and so many more tools that you can’t possibly imagine. To find these tools, just do a search by entering domain, tools, research, etc.

Something I forgot to mention: how much it does cost to hold a domain? It varies by registrars, but a ballpark figure is about $10 annually. Don’t get confused here, this is not to host a site; the $10 is just to hold the domain under your ownership.

Internet Entrepreneurship needs lots of research, efforts, and time. It does not make you money overnight, but if you can stick to it for the long run, a rewarding life awaits you.

What kind of courage do you need to tell your dad at the age of 16 that you are planning to quit high school? Moreover, wouldn‘t it be a lot harder if your dad is an immigrant from India who came to the U.S. with only $25 in order to pursue a better life through education and a traditional nine-to-five lifestyle?

Gurbaksh Chahal gathered that courage and asked his parents’ permission to quit school when he was 16. His dad was nice enough to patiently listen what he had to say, but still was not convinced. He asked this kid to show him some proof. He had no idea what this kid was doing in his room on the computer day and night. Once Gurbaksh showed his parents his bank account, their eyes were about to pop out in disbelief, and they thought their boy was going to jail. They started to panic. Who wouldn’t? Especially an Indian parent, to whom saving $100,000 cash would be unimaginable over a lifetime. And here this 16-year-old kid is sitting on that kind of cash.

Gurbaksh assured them that this was not stolen money and he made it from his Internet entrepreneurship. His dad eventually calmed down after listening to his explanation and gave him a one year break from going to school. Gurbaksh was 16 at that time. Guess what happened after one year? His Internet venture went so well that he was able to make $40 million in two years. So here is this 18-year-old kid who made $40 by selling his first online company ClickAgents for $40 million. Gurbaksh, or G, is now 26 years of age and last year he sold his second company BlueLithium to Yahoo for $300 million. G’s current project is gWallet – a site that allows users to find great deals.

G will be featured on the new TV show The Secret Millionaire, due out in December 2008. He has also appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, FOX Business Network, The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, Entrepreneur magazine, and many more. G is currently venturing into a few other TV shows.

G’s recently published book The Dream advises entrepreneurs to dream big, embrace risks, and go after new niches. According to Chahal, failure is not an option. I had a glance at The Dream and I liked it after reading the first few pages. I hope to review it for ADJ readers in the future. The success story of G shows us how you can overcome any barriers and succeed. All you need is a dream, perseverance, and a belief in yourself.

Part Four is where it gets very interesting. I asked some celebrity bloggers (including Darren Rowse and Steve Pavlina) to answer the following question: What You Need to Become a Successful Blogger? I will be presenting the perspectives these bloggers provided for A Dawn Journal readers.
Part 4 – What You Need To Become A Successful Blogger?

Warning: Do not quit you job right after reading this article. Do quit once your entrepreneurship starts making more money than your 9 – 5 paycheque .

This section has two parts. In the first, I will describe what I think you need to become a successful Blogger/Internet entrepreneur. In the second, I will describe what celebrity-bloggers/Internet entrepreneurs think you need to become successful.

Part One

I think these are the most important things you need to become a successful person in this line of work (or in any line of work).

A. Passion – Pick something you love to write about. Pick something you can do year after year enthusiastically and passionately. Don’t give yourself another job. This should not feel like a job. It should feel like you are not working at all. But how you can tell you love doing this? Your topic and/or
subject should be your true goal in life. This should be something you can’t possibly live without and you would do for free. Yes, that is correct. Imagine there is no money involved here and then ask yourself, “Do I love my subject enough that if there was no monetary reward involved and I would still
do it for free?” If your answer is yes, than you have found your true passion. When I started www.adawn.net, I had no idea that a website can make money. I did not start it for money; in addition, I enjoyed it so much that I launched my 2nd site www.adawnjournal.com. I was not making money at that time and even now, if I were not making money – I would still be working on these sites. You cannot and will not fail if you do something you love and it is your true passion in life.

B. Perseverance – Stick to it like your life depended on it. Success does not come easy. There will always be ups and downs. You may not make money for the 1st year, 2nd year, or even 3rd year, but you will make money one day. Not everyone is John Chow. He monetized his blog in September 2006 and made $352.94. In September 2007, he made $20,512.17. Not everyone can make money that fast but you will make money if you are patient and keep working hard. Think of this as a one-way journey. If you started it, you must end this with success. There is not going back.

C. Believe in Yourself – This is a simple but very powerful strategy. Get rid of self-imposed limitations and start living a life full of confidence. When you are able to truly believe in yourself, you will start achieving your goals.

Part Two

I asked some celebrity bloggers to answer the same above question for A Dawn Journal readers who
might not be that tech-savvy; after all, personal finance blog readers are not expected to be tech-savvy. The perspectives I provided in Part One are somewhat general. The perspectives these high-profile bloggers provided are based on their ocean full of practical knowledge and hands-on experience in their professional work.

Darren Rowse – Darren wrote: “It’s just such a big question that I feel I’d be doing a disservice to your readers to try to sum it up in just a few words!” He then added, “Probably the best way for me to answer this is to point to a post I wrote on the topic a few days back which has 12 traits of successful bloggers.” Darren also recommended another post. Here are those two posts Darren recommended for A Dawn Journal readers:

12 Traits of Successful Bloggers http://www.problogger.net/archives/2008/05/20/11-traits-of-successful-bloggers/

Steve Pavlina – Steve asked A Dawn Journal readers to read the two following posts:

How to Make Money from Your Blog http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2006/05/how-to-make-money-from-your-blog/

How to Build a High-Traffic Web Site or blog http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2006/01/how-to-build-a-high-traffic-web-site-or-blog/

Nick Ramsay – Nick wanted to share the following with A Dawn Journal readers:
“Like most people, I was working a day job and desperately in search of the time freedom that working from home on the internet provides. One of the most important realizations I came to in order to achieve that goal was that you really don’t need to make a lot of money at all. If you can cut expenses and sacrifice some of the luxuries you enjoy in your current lifestyle, you might find that working from home is a realistic possibility. Then, of course, you’ll have more time to build up your home business and earn back those lifestyle choices you previously gave up.
Blogging is not my specialty, but I have outsourced an entire blog’s worth of content before, and that site provides a steady stream of income that is most welcome. It’s interesting to compare that particular blog with my own, much bigger yet considerably less profitable, personal blog. The outsourced blog is very much focused on one theme, as opposed to my personal blog, which is a mish-mash of topics. That means that it ranks consistently higher in search engine results for terms related to that topic. Another possible reason for its success is that the articles are, at around 750 words each, content rich and most importantly, useful for the reader.”

Bob Buskirk – Bob had the following message for A Dawn Journal readers:
“I think to become a successful blogger you need to write about what you love, write QUALITY posts, have a good posting schedule, and most importantly connect with your readers.”

. . . If you are still reading, congratulations on making it this far. This post is one of my longest and will hopefully be generating heavy traffic. Making a living blogging is not easy; but it is not difficult either. For the first few years, you have to sacrifice a lot. You have to give up all the little (and some big) indulgences and bury yourself in work. You have to think outside the box. You have to transform yourself from a traditional mindset to a very non-traditional mindset. Doing all of these can be quite a daunting task, but it is not impossible. If you can do it, a very rewarding dot com lifestyle awaits you.

NB: After reading this article, if you are inspired enough to become a successful entrepreneur, please share your story with A Dawn Journal readers. It will be appreciated.

Part Four is where it gets very interesting. I asked some celebrity bloggers (including Darren Rowse and Steve Pavlina) to answer the following question: What You Need to Become a Successful Blogger? I will be presenting the perspectives these bloggers provided for A Dawn Journal readers. If this is your first time here, you might want to Subscribe to the RSS Feed. Thank you for reading.

Can Anyone Make A Living Blogging?

Part 3 – What Is A Dot Com Lifestyle?

Warning: Do not quit you job right after reading this article. Do quit once your entrepreneurship starts making more money than your 9 – 5 paycheque .

What Is a Dot Com Lifestyle?

Dot com lifestyle is not about what it sounds like, as you will find out reading the following links. Dot com lifestyle is not about making truck loads of money, driving over-priced cars, eating out everyday at fine restaurants, and visiting a new country every week. While you may be able to achieve some of these I just mentioned, most of the bloggers (or Internet entrepreneurs) have decided to live a simple family-oriented life, just like you and I. However, they have something which we don’t have. They are living on their own terms and they have ridiculously flexible lifestyle choices. What I think of the dot com lifestyle? These are what come to my mind and keep me motivated all the time:

Work two hours a day and five days a week

Live in a new country for every six months a year (if you have a family, make it two to four months)

The whole world is your office (you can work anywhere as long as you have your laptop and internet connection)

Live on your own terms

Have ridiculously flexible lifestyle choices

Now, let’s look at the dot com lifestyle of some actual people who are already living it:

John Chow – A Canadian Blogger residing in Richmond, BC

The Dot Com Lifestyle

Nick Ramsay – Lives in Japan with his wife and one child. Her Japanese wife picked up one English phrase very quickly: “I am not your maid!”

Bob Buskirk – A 21 year old Internet entrepreneur living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. And yes, there are even 18 year olds and younger living a dot com lifestyle as well.

Living the Dot Com Lifestyle

Steve Pavlina – Personal Development Guru. His website gets more than 2 million visitors per month. This article is little different than those mentioned above.

10 Reasons You Should Never Get a Job
